About Cuckoo Wasps
Cuckoo wasps are small, brilliant wasps with shiny blue, green, purple or red bodies. They are called cuckoo wasps because the female slips into the nest of another wasp or bee and lays her egg there, so her young feed on the host's food or young.
What Cuckoo Wasps Look Like
Look for a metallic, jewel-like body with a textured surface, often blue-green or ruby red. Many can curl into a ball when disturbed.
Nests and Life Cycle
Cuckoo wasps do not build nests. They search walls, fences, dead timber and other places where mud-dauber, potter and solitary bee nests are found. Because of this, you may see them around old mud nests and garden walls.
