About Paper Wasps
Paper wasps are the wasps most people meet around the house. They are slender, with a narrow waist and long legs that dangle in flight, and they build open, umbrella-shaped nests from chewed wood fibre. Native Australian paper wasps are common, and the introduced Asian paper wasp has become established in some areas.
What Paper Wasps Look Like
Look for a lean body with yellow and brown markings, two pairs of brownish wings and a small head with long antennae. They are smaller and less brightly marked than European wasps.
Nests and Life Cycle
Overwintering queens start nests in spring, sheltering under eaves, in shrubs or in sheds. The nest is a single layer of hexagonal cells hanging from a short stalk, often with a few hundred cells at its largest. Most of the colony dies off in cooler weather, while young queens shelter and start again the next season.
Is It a Problem at Your Property?
Paper wasps sting when the nest is disturbed. Because they choose spots near people - eaves, pergolas, letterboxes and outdoor furniture - nests are often best dealt with early. Contact us for paper wasp removal.

What should I do if I find a wasp nest?
Keep people and pets away, don't block the entrance and don't knock or spray the nest. Contact us and we will identify the wasp and arrange an inspection.
